Laxmi Bahadur Nirala has been designated as a member of the Judicial Council.
President Bidya Bhandari designated Nirala to the position Tuesday on the reference of the government, Office of the President informed.
The council is accountable for selecting and proposing judges for the courts and also disciplining judges involved in wrongdoings.
The government had suggested Nirala, who served as attorney general during King Gyanendra’s direct rule, as a member of the Judicial Council.
Soon after the proposal, the Parliamentary Hearings Committee had authorized his name paving the way for his appointment.
PM KP Sharma Oli had nominated him for the post.
