China on Monday reiterated their position about stresses between India and Pakistan that it supported all efforts conducive to calm and stability in the region.
Answering question whether the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation would serve as a platform to speak about the India-Pakistan faceoff, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang stated, “Both are very important nations in South Asia and we trust they will resolve the problem through consultations and dialogue. As for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) platform, we help all efforts which are conducive to peace and durability in the region.”
On whether China would play the role of a mediator to ease the tensions between India and Pakistan, Lu said Beijing was in close contact with both the nations and would continue to play a constructive role.
“China welcomes all efforts which are helpful to easing stress and to promote peace and durability. We are now in close contact with the two countries from the beginning and we are going to continue to do so and play a constructive role,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated at a media briefing.
The declaration comes on the backdrop of Russia saying that it had been ready to mediate between India and Pakistan to make an effort to calm tensions between the two nuclear powers.
Last week, following India’s airstrikes in Pakistan’s Balakot, China had declared that it expected the two nations would maintain “restraint” and “do much more to improve bilateral relations”. “Fighting terrorism is a global practice and needs necessary cooperation,” Kang had stated.share on
